Bodegas Castaño was founded in 1950 by Ramón Castaño Santa. Today Ramón and his three sons, Ramón, Juan Pedro and Daniel run the estate together. They are known for being the pioneers of DO Yecla and in the use of Monastrell for making high quality and complex wines. In 1980 they started producing wines under their own label. And today the estate consists of around 500 hectars of vineyards, mostly planted with old bush vine Monastrell.

The vineyards are divided by their four estates, Las Gruesas, El Espinal, Pozuelo and Arabí. The main grape on all estates is Monastrell, but also Garnacha Tintorera and Cabernet Sauvignon are important. Soiltypes can be all from rocky limestone to fine clay. But generally everything is from poor soils. The vines range in age from 20 years old to almost a century, and some of the oldest are ungrafted.

The harvest is done by hand, and they have the capacity to do both small individualized fermentations and large scale quality wines.
